COLOR EXPLOSION: DYEING FABRICS TO MARBLE - Brighten winter with a garden of color in a class which provides an excellent introduction to the nature of color. For one full and fascinating day we'll dye ordinary cotton and/or silk in a spectrum of colors- analogous, complimentary and single, double and triple-dyed fabrics (57 colors total). The rest of the week will be devoted to material preparation and pattern development for marbling, a hydro-printing process. One question will guide the week: "What would happen if...?"

If you are a fiber fan and want to feel more confident in the functional properties of color you'll love this class. This class has received great feedback from students. It also comes with an extensive handout.

February 29 (Lecture), March 1-2 (Class) * Arizona Designer Craftsmen * Tucson, Arizona * www.adcsouth.org

HISTORY OF MARBLING Slide Lecture and Demo - Laura will share an overview of marbling's 500 year history Friday evening. Before showing slides she will demonstrate the process to give the audience a visual introduction to making a hydro-print. Also, visuals of todays international marblers will be shown with discussion about some of the various skills required to accomplish the images.

NATURE PRINTS WITH MARBLING Weekend Class - Visualize plain fabrics transformed into colorful prints reminiscent of nature's graceful forms. Each student will experience modern marbling, a hydro-printing process, by creating fluid prints on fabric. As a surface design process, marbling provides fascinating possibilities in collaboration with other media through incorporation and/or inspiration. The class will be an exciting combination of gaining new information and having freedom to explore the process. Because of the instant gratification of pulling a print students will be able to try and evaluate many ideas. Marbling is an experience not to be missed. Let it cast its spell on you. All levels

March 16-22, 2008 * Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts * Gatlinburg, Tennessee * www.arrowmont.org

REFLECTIONS AND MEMORIES: CREATING PERSONAL IMAGES WITH VAT DYE DISCHARGE ON FABRIC - We all need reminders to reflect on nature's gifts and to remember moments with friends and family (two and four legged). Each student will be able to create a memory wall hanging inspired by personal photos, postcards and magazine clippings. Various methods of composing imagery on fabric using vat dye discharge will be taught. Discharge pase mixed with vat dye powder is applied to colored fabric by stamping, painting and/or mono-print methods. When steamed the magic happens...the original color is removed and simultaneously replaced with new color. Each student will go home with samples and a piece ready to hang. * * * All levels

March 29-30, 2008 * University North Carolina Asheville * Reuter Center's Studio Masters Series * Asheville, NC *

MARBLING MAGIC FOR FABRICS - Marbling, a fascinating hydro-printing process will be used to turn plain fabrics into a garden of color and pattern.  The fundamentals of classical pattern development will be used as a springboard for students to develop their own designs.  The class will also have an opportunity to learn more about mixing colors from playful to sophisticated pallets.  By the end of the weekend students will have the basics of material preparation and use, as well as the ability to arrange an efficient home set-up to continue experiencing the magic of marbling.

August 1-5, 2008 * Coupeville Arts Center * Whidbey Island, Washington * www.coupevillearts.org

VAT DYE DISCHARGE PRINTING: IMAGERY WITHOUT DRAWING "KNOW HOW" - Vat dye discharge is an exciting surface design process that will be used to create personalized imagery. A corn dextrin discharge paste mixed with vat dye will be applied to cotton, rayon and/or silk* by stamping, painting and mono-print methods. When the fabric is steamed students will see the magic happen...the original color will be removed and simulataneously replaced with new color. Students will have an opportunity to convert favorite impressions of photographed scenes, patterns in nature and ideas from the imagination into permanent images on fabric. It is good to know that with some simple tools and a few tricks of the trade anyone can draw. *NOTE: Cotton, rayon and silk must be colored with fiber reactive dye (ex. Procion MX, F and H dye, Remazol liquid dye or acid dye) in order to be discharged. All levels
